Artist statement

Mica Bolaños is an animator and illustrator native to Mexico City with an immense passion for storytelling, culture, and language.

Mica's films explore these themes through universes full of color, shapes and patterns and with comical (although not always cheerful) stories that usually hide a much darker criticism of our modern society, immigration, consumerism's exploitation of one's culture and personal history, and how we relate to each other and to our surroundings with filters like language barriers, borders, long distances or rapidly-advancing technology. The characters featured in Mica's films usually find themselves lost in translation, or involved in situations where they feel alienated, confused or even sabotaged. This, however, doesn't take away from their charming and sometimes quirky personalities, that are thought to captivate the audience's attention and curiosity as they dive into the character's fondest memories and deepest fears.

As an artist who's in love with all types of animation, Mica believes that all practices inform one another, and that this should be used as means for storytelling. She has developed a great interest in combining and intertwining 2D animation and stop motion techniques such as pixelation, cut-out and object animation, and her process is based on taking extra care in finding the appropriate approach and tools to give each scene the mood and tone it requires. This combination of visual languages directly relates to the subject matter to create a well rounded experience that would guide the audience even through the most abstract and hidden concepts.

Mica hopes that her work acts as a ticket for the audience to experience and relate with the minds of those who think, speak and live differently, and inspire a critical dialogue on how our lives directly impact those of others, for better or for worse.
